ChrisPredator: Badlands ForumThe ultimate Alien / Predator connection: Engineers altered Yautja DNA – Connecting all the films coherently

@Derek, I agree! I'm also a big fan of Prometheus and appreciated the questions it posed. I didn't draw the comparison to AvP initially but you are right, there are a significant number of parallels between the two. It does make sense to think of the Alien and Predator franchises as an elaborate metaphor for our own arms race obsessions. The idea does make sense and could be worked in to the crossover more than simply "game preserve" or "rich Predators hunt poor, captive aliens"  (unless that's the metaphor they're going for.. lol). As for a Ripley Queen Empress on Earth - that's a far out idea for sure, but hey - anything would be better than Alien pets and robot children.

Great response, thanks for sharing your ideas!

Yes I agree with much of what you have proposed. I actually had the idea almost immediately after watching "Prometheus" at the cinema many years ago (I absolutely loved that film = it opened a massive can of questions! Most people criticized that. Which is nonsensical = I love a movie that leaves you with more questions than answers!). So yes I had the idea that the Engineers were behind the creation of the Predators (as experiments in their obsession with bio-weapon development). But also that the Engineers had instilled in the Predators a continued instinct & cultural drive for Hyper-Evolution (via both Natural & Artificial Selection means). I always thought of the whole Alien/Prometheus/Predator film universe as an ongoing comment on the evolutionary bio-arms race that began when our most ancient ancestors where single-celled blobs in the primordial oceans (obviously in the context of these films: that may be an ocean on the original Engineer's Home World). But that arms-race has continued to this very day, even amongst us humans, who are obsessed with continuous military weapons development. And I felt that most of the films were making some sort of a comment on those ideas. [Just a quick comment: I know most people don't seem to like the "AvP" movie: But if you watch it, before or after, watching "Prometheus" you might realise that they are almost essentially the same film = though admittedly, "Prometheus" has far better production values on many levels. But it will give a better appreciation for "AvP". "AvP2" had the wonderful idea of a Xenomorph-Predator Hybrid, but the film was attrociously produced & extremely boring! It's extremely rare for me to criticise films, but I really think that they cut corners terribly on that one. I also have some serious issues with the Shane Black "The Predator" film, but I won't go into all that now.] I do have an idea to create a trilogy of films as a contintuation from "Alien: Resurrection" with Sigourney Weaver as the Ripley/Queen Hybrid on Earth & then into the galaxy = culminating in a large scale war involving Humanity, the Predators, the Engineers & a Xenomorph Alien Homeworld, which Ripley becomes the Goddess-Queen of. [Incidentally: I do realise that there as so many "coincidental" ideological overlaps that that has with her "Kiri" character in the "AVATAR" franchise, but I had this "new Alien Resurrection film series" idea in my head many years ago = so I think it would be cool to have her kind of play the same role, but on a far more violent and visceral world of a Xenomorph Paradise that she must rule over & defend from all the different factions coming there to want to exploit their biology as bio-weapons. It would be like Xenomorph's fighting for freedom from these mad waring groups. Anyway, that's my basic idea. But I have fleshed it out quite a bit. I'd love to submit it to Ridley Scott or James Cameron, or someone at the A&P Franchise at Twentieth Century Studios & Disney. I'd just love to see it on screen, with Sigourney in the lead role (while she is still with us, pray).

Davix88Predator: Badlands ForumIs Predator: Badlands (2025) better than Prey (2022)?

This is a tough one. I loved them both but I like prey a little more. Loved the design for feral and kept true to the lore. Don’t get me wrong. I liked the new take of badlands. Just don’t like a lot of changes. Haha

I don't like the idea of mixing Engineers in with Predators. I always liked to think of them as rivals.

The Amengi should be explored more but I can see how it could all link back to Engineers.

Honorable mention: The Amengi – an ancient alien race which once enslaved the Yautja... perhaps could also have been a faction of Engineer? Or a link in the family tree. Engineers and Amengi share some common traits as well from the limited knowledge we have about them.

I didn’t dislike it, but it wasn’t for me. Strong start, then it leaned too young. The Alien tie-in felt unnecessary, Predator stands better on its own without Weyland-Yutani or synthetics. Would have loved to see some original concepts filling in where they borrowed Alien. In the end it felt a lot like Marvel and Star Wars.

@Chris Hear what you’re saying keeping it positive. With it being a crossover, power of Disney marketing, and PG13 rating we should have seen Alien/Predator fans bringing their family’s in crowds giving away money. The older gen should have brought their fams younger gen to get them hooked early. It’s really interesting seeing the lack of turnout. The audience should have been there. The studio was trying hard to get that audience and it should have snagged a decent crowd. Might be easy or obvious to assume that people are not looking for this crossover. Maybe they should have kept it pure Predator with no Alien universe and no PG13 crutch. Instead of mashing elements from a separate IP they should have focused on creating something entirely unique to the Predator universe. Should have been the route. Who knows maybe Alien: Earth dug Badlands a whole as well. Online chatter isn’t so great for Earth. That said I’m sure it will function better as a streamer.

Predator has never had as much star power and box office appeal as the Alien franchise, it's always been even more niche so I'm not surprised by the numbers comparison to Alien: Romulus at all. However, as a PREDATOR movie, it did do surprisingly well. Following an abysmal box office month right before its release, it fared well and given its competition shortly thereafter, it held its ground respectably. As a Predator movie, Badlands was a win. As a financial investment, it wasn't a goldmine.

@hiveMUTHUR dude… exactly! been saying this exact thing for a long time… marketing hype around Badlands trying so hard to say it’s some major franchise success when it isn’t even a standalone Predator universe film. whether you like it or not it’s still a flop. thems just the facts.

HiveMUTHURPredator: Badlands NewsFinal numbers are in: Predator: Badlands made $184.2 million against a $105 million budget!

Predator: Badlands is being shoe-horned into the conversation as some kind of hit, but the numbers tell a very different story. The film had a huge reported production budget of about $105 million and opened with a respectable franchise-record ~$40 million domestically and ~$80 million worldwide in its first weekend thanks to that broad PG-13 rating and the Alien crossover hype — yet as it ends it’s theatrical run it only grossed around ~$184 million worldwide total against that $105 million cost, which doesn’t come close to the ~2.5× multiple studios usually need to actually turn a profit in theaters after marketing costs and exhibitor splits are factored in

Now contrast that with what Alien: Romulus made for an estimated ~$80 million budget and pulling in over ~$350 million globally, proving that audiences will show up in massive numbers stand alone Alien film.  So while Romulus, with its tighter budget and R-rated edge, leveraged quality and lore into serious box office muscle, Badlands leaned hard into crossover bait and PG-13 outreach and still couldn’t even sniff comparable returns. It’s a joke to call Badlands a success. Alien: Romulus ran circles around it with a smaller budget, bigger haul, and proof that even a Predator/Alien Universe mash-up couldn’t save this flick from underperforming.
